Yes, first aid cabinets can be locked; however, they must be readily accessible in the event of an emergency. Locking the cabinet may limit accessibility. Title 29 CFR 1910.151(b) states: "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available."

If the employer has persons who are trained in first aid, then adequate first aid supplies must be readily available for use. These supplies need to be stored in a convenient area available for emergency access.

However, if OSHA found that an employer was relying on first aid services not provided by a clinic, infirmary, or hospital and adequate first aid supplies were not available when needed, then the employer would be in violation of 29 CFR 1910.151(b).

Studies have shown that despite the 15-minute flushing requirement, users usually flush exposed body parts five minutes or less. The reasons were always related to the extreme discomfort users experienced using cold water. In cold climates the water temperature in indoor plumbed systems can be in the 2-7°C (35-45°F) range.

Also, drinkable tap water may not provide the best flushing solution. Tap water may contain many contaminants and could aggravate the injured body part. Some municipal water supplies also contain chlorine which can irritate and leach salt from the eye tissue. As well, tap water may contain rust, scale and chemicals. Running the water continually keeps the water line fresh. Plumbed emergency eyewash stations should use water that is periodically tested and treated to remove chemical contaminants.

Portable, self-contained eyewash stations have a limited amount of fluid. As a result, maintenance is critical to ensure that units are fully charged at all times.

These eyewash stations also require ongoing maintenance of the buffered saline solution. The agents used to control bacterial growth are effective for certain limited periods of time. Also, small amoebae capable of causing serious eye infections have been found in portable and stationary eyewash stations. Consequently it is important to monitor the shelf life of the solution and replace the solution when it has expired.

2010 ANSI approved a new High Visibility Standard

On January 8th, 2010, ANSI approved a new revision of the 107 Standard on High Visibility Apparel. The two significant changes one being reflective material around the shoulder area and the other any garment marked FR must comply with one of the FR standards.

ARLINGTON, Va.- EON-An updated national consensus standard for high-visibility safety apparel from the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) now provides criteria and test requirements for garments marked as flame- or water-resistant, and includes service-life guidelines.

“Due to this widespread use, garments have evolved to address other needs of workers, such as flame-resistant properties. The inclusion of flame-resistance criteria as an optional feature is in direct response to end-user requests.”

The American National Standard for High Visibility Safety Apparel and Headwear (ANSI/ISEA 107-2010) is the authoritative document for the design, performance specifications, and use of high-visibility apparel, including millions of vests, jackets, coveralls, trousers, rainwear and headwear, worn by workers in thousands of road construction, emergency response, forestry and other industrial and business settings.

This second update since ISEA published the first edition in 1999 was developed by ISEA’s High Visibility Products Group and approved by key stakeholders representing utility workers, safety professionals, transportation safety experts, testing laboratories and government agencies. Though the revision does not change the long-standing requirements for compliant garments with respect to classification and color, it does address important issues for the wearer related to flame-resistance and use during rainfall.

“In the past decade, the acceptance and use of high-visibility garments have become commonplace in working environments where any kind of vehicular movement is present,” said Jim Teigen, chairman of the ISEA High-Visibility Products Group and business manager of OK-1 Manufacturing, Altus, Okla. “Due to this widespread use, garments have evolved to address other needs of workers, such as flame-resistant properties. The inclusion of flame-resistance criteria as an optional feature is in direct response to end-user requests.”

Additionally, the update calls attention to the service-life guidelines for high-visibility garments that have been established by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). “It is important that the end-user be aware of a high-visibility garment’s capability to offer continued protection,” Teigen noted. “For this reason, users are encouraged to follow guidelines put forth by the FHWA and manufacturers to ensure that workers are being seen at all times, in all situations.”

The 43-page American National Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel and Headwear (ANSI/ISEA 107-2010) includes examples of apparel configurations known to meet the standard. How To Stop A Bloody Nose

Here's How To Stop A Bloody Nose:

Stay Safe! Follow universal precautions and wear personal protective equipment if you have it. The victim's bloody nose may be from trauma. Make sure you are not going to be hurt while helping the victim.
Lean forward, not back. Don't try to protect a favorite shirt by leaning back. The blood needs to go somewhere and will most likely go down the throat. If the victim leans back, blood could get in the windpipe causing a blocked airway, or go into the stomach. Blood may irritate the stomach lining and cause the victim to vomit.
Pinch the victim's nose just below the bony bridge. Your fingers should be on the soft tissue as well as the bone. If there is still blood flowing, adjust your grip. There should not be visible bleeding while you are holding the nose. Blood vessels that supply the nasal membrane can be pinched against the bony bridge (the hard part) to slow blood flow and create a clot. Hold the nose for at least 5 minutes. Do not let go to check bleeding until the 5 minutes is up.
After 5 minutes, release the pressure to see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, repeat Step 3 for 10 minutes this time. Remember: don't let go to check bleeding until the 10 minutes is up. Repeat for another 10 minutes if necessary.
If a bloody nose doesn't stop after the second or third try, it's time to see a doctor. If at any time, the victim feels lightheaded, dizzy, or weak, call 911. If left uncontrolled, bloody noses can lead to shock.

Tips:

Placing ice or a chemical cold pack over the bridge of the nose can constrict the blood vessels and help stop bleeding. Use this in addition to pressure.
After the bleeding is controlled, do not let the victim blow his or her nose. Blowing the nose will release the clots and encourage bleeding to start again.
Most bloody noses are the result of dry nasal membranes or trauma. However, some nosbleeds occur spontaneously and may indicate more serious medical problems. Contact a physician if the victim is suffering from frequent or hard-to-control bloody noses.
Bloody noses after trauma to the head may indicate a brain injury - especially if the bleeding occurs without obvious facial injury. If a victim of significant trauma - such as a vehicle accident or fall - is bleeding from the nose, call 911 immediately.

Stopping a bloody nose is so important because most victims see the blood and can and do panic. Stopping the bleeding as soon as possible is very important. Safety orientation for new employees

Name Brand vs Generic Drugs

It is easy to become concerned about the effectiveness and quality of generic drugs over their name brand equivalent. People asume that generic drugs are far less expensive and thus the myth was created that they are a poorer quality, manufactured in poorer quality facilities, or take longer to work then the name brand drugs.

The FDA estimates that in reality over 50% of these generic drugs are produced by brand name companies. The FDA also applies the same standards for both generic and name brand drugs to all manufacturers.

Cost difference is primarily due to research and development costs of a new drug in order to bring it to market along with advertising. The drug company that develops the drug is granted a patent. They become the exclusive manufacturer of that drug until the patent expires. Other companies may then apply for permission to manufacturer the drug from the FDA. Since these companies do not have the substantial up front investment they can ultimately sell their product for less.

FDA requires the generic drugs work as fast and as effectively as the original product. Generic drugs will not look exactly like the brand name because of Trademark laws in America, so they may have a different color, shape, or taste but the active ingredients must be the same insuring that both have the same medical effect.

Generics are copies of the original drugs. They have the same dosage, intended use, pharmaceutical effect, and risks as the brand name drugs.

Examples of this would be Medique Ibuprofen as compared to Advil or Motrin and Medique Non-Aspirin (Acetaminophen) compared to Tylenol.

Using Hand Tool Safely

Almost everyone must use a hand tool on occasion either at home or at work but did you know that 8% of all work related accidents involve a hand tool of some type. This can be either a powered hand tool or a manual hand tool.

This is mostly attributed to using the correct tool incorrectly or simply using the wrong tool for the job. Failure to wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment and failure to follow safety guidelines also account for a large portion of these injuries.

To protect yourself and your co-workers follow some simple “common sense” guidelines;

1. Never use a tool you do not know how to use or have never been trained to use.
2. Know your tools and the correct function they were designed to perform.
3. Never use “cheaters”, always select the right size tool for the job.
4. Make sure that you and your tools are secure when working on elevated ladders, scaffold, or platforms for your protection as well as those working below you.

It’s Just Too Darn Hot!

To Beat the Heat-Plan Ahead

There seems to be no end in sight for the recent heat wave that has settled in on most of the country. We have all read the recent blogs and newsletters by now on heat stress and heat stroke and are familiar with the warning signs and dangers of heat related illness. Even though some of us are starting to get acclimated to this heat wave we must still guard against heat related illness.

Pre-planning is the best way to do this.

If you must work outdoors then watch the weather forecast for the upcoming week and plan ahead for those excessively hot days.

It is important to hydrate yourself BEFORE the work day. Drink at least 16 oz. of water before bed the night before and then 16 oz. again when you awake. It is also a good idea to drink plenty of fluids after a hearty breakfast.

Take plenty of sports drinks and/or water with you to work. Sports drinks (electrolyte drinks) are specifically designed to replenish the electrolytes that occur naturally in your body. Although water has some cooling effects and will hydrate you, your body needs something it can quickly absorb. Electrolyte drinks such as Squincher are designed specifically for high heat work environments. It is recommended that you drink 6 to 8 oz. of this every 15 minutes or so and a glass of water every thirty minutes. Always avoid drinking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages and remember it is best to drink fluids BEFORE you become thirsty.

When planning for those hot days remember to wear light weight, loose fitting, and light colored clothes.

Pay attention to your body’s warning signs. If you feel any of the symptoms of heat stress then it is time to take a break and find a shady or cool spot to rest.

Choosing Hearing Protection:

There are many types and styles to choose from when it comes to selecting hearing protection devices . Making a choice can be difficult but remember, the best protection device is one that is convenient to use when in a noise hazard zone and comfortable to wear.. Here are some of your choices;
Earmuffs: They come in a variety of models and work to block out noise by completely covering the outer ear. These may not be suitable for workers with beards or eye glasses. Facial hair and eye glass temples break to seal of the noise barriers. Expandable plugs or canal caps may be a better choice for these individuals.
Expandable Foam Plugs: The most popular and widely used plugs today. The materials for these are formable and the plug will expand and conform to your ear canal. One size will fit all. Simply roll these into a small cylindrical shape on your palm or between your fingers then place them in your ear canal. They will then expand to fit.

Pre-Molded Reusable Plugs: Normally made from plastic, rubber, or silicon, these come in assorted sizes of small, medium, or large. The advantage is that they are reusable and washable; When working in a dirty environment this is a good alternative to rolling expandable plugs because you don’t need to handle them when rolling the tips.
Canal Caps: These are earplugs on a flexible metal or plastic band. These are most convenient when coming and going from noise hazard environments. When in a quiet environment simply remove and let hang around the neck and when returning to a noisy environment they can be easily reinstalled.
Stem and Foam Tip Plugs: When you prefer the comfort of foam plugs but don’t like rolling them in a dirty environment this is a good choice. These are inserted similar to a foam plug but you do not have to roll them. Simply hold the stem and press into the ear.

EYE SAFETY CHECK LIST

Roughly 2000 workers have a job-related eye injury each day in the US that requires medical treatment. One third of these injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms and more than 100 of these result in lost work days.

Use this eye safety check list to minimize or prevent eye injuries;

o Create a safe work environment by minimizing hazards from falling or unstable debris.

Gloves can be an essential tool for working safely and efficiently. Choose a glove that will improve grip when handling tools or slippery objects, protect from extreme temperatures, protect from sharp objects and protect from toxic and corrosive chemicals.

Choose a glove that fits well and will give you the grip you need to work safely.
Coated cotton gloves or ones with rubber dots require less grip force by the wearer when handling items without handles or slippery items. The most common injuries are cuts and scrapes that are a break in the skin and possible penetration to the muscle tissue. Other common wounds could be burns, bites and broken blisters.

Know these tips for basic wound care:

1. First of all you must stop the bleeding by applying pressure with a gauze pad or blood stopper compress.

2. Then you must clean or wash out the wound to remove any foreign debris. Use a wound wash designed for this or just run water over it in an attempt to clean it out. If you allow the wound to bleed for a moment this may also help in removing any debris. If the debris cannot be removed you may want to seek medical attention.

3. Applying an antiseptic spray or antiseptic ointment is necessary to prevent infections. Infections cause the wound to heal slowly and infections will lead to further complications.

4. Apply clean bandages. Keep the wound covered and moist. This will speed up the healing process.

What you should look for

Slips occur due to lack of friction between the persons feet and the floor. Any spills of any nature whether water, liquids, oils or fuels are the most common,
Saw dust or dirty floors can also contribute.
All spills of any liquid should be cleaned up at once. You should develop good housekeeping procedures and also consider re-routing traffic in areas hard to keep clean.

Standardizing colors is beneficial when workers must move from one job to another and eliminates the need for lengthy written descriptions on signs.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed universal standards for color. These standards adopted by OSHA were put in place to help train employees, protect workers, designate the location of safety equipment and first aid supplies, identify hazardous machinery or parts and reduce workplace accidents.

Coding for Safety Colors;

Red for Danger
Red is used to mark fire alarm boxes, extinguishers and hydrants. Red is used for color coding flammable liquids. Used on all emergency stop buttons and bars.

Orange for warning on dangerous machinery parts or energized equipment
Used for the background color for all “warning” signs and labels.

Yellow for Caution
Used in the background color for caution safety labels and signs. Also used for storage cabinets, for marking handrails and overhead beams, and all potential physical hazards.

Purple is used for Radiation Hazards

Used on boundaries for stairways, for directional signs and for traffic isles.

Working outdoors for extended periods without the use of protective sunscreen increases the exposure to UV radiation and causes sunburns.

This is the time of year to get prepared. We have all faced this condition at one time or another.

Remember that prolong exposure over time can lead to premature wrinkling of the skin, age spots, and most importantly Skin Cancer.

Of the three types of UV Radiation UVA radiation has the ability to penetrate deep into the cell structure and is most dangerous. Remember, sunlight exposure is highest in the summer months between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. You even run the risk of high exposure on cloudy days.

Check any medications you may be taking, many common prescriptions and over the counter drugs can increase your sensitivity to UV rays.

Symptoms of a sun burn do not show up for 4 hours after exposure and worsen as time goes on. For relief you may take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Acetaminophen. Drink plenty of liquids and you may apply a low dose .5% to 1.0% hydrocortisone cream to relieve swelling, reduce the burning and speed the healing process.

Use caution this summer, wear protective sunscreens, wear wide brim hats and use sunglasses or grey tinted safety glasses outdoors.

Emergency Eyewash-Clarification on types and uses:

You will hear several terms used in describing eyewash stations and at times it may cause some confusion. The following are some simple terms and brief descriptions of different eyewash – face/wash options.

Eyewash Flushing Bottles

16 oz. and 32 oz. bottles are considered personal eyewashes. They are designed to provide immediate flushing of eyes or skin but do not meet the requirements of an approved emergency eyewash station. They can be used to provide immediate relief so the employee can make it to the approved station.

Be aware that all eyewash bottles do have a shelf life and will have an expiration date clearly printed on each bottle. Even if the bottle is unopened and the seal in tact, they MUST be replaced when they pass the expiration date or the seal has been broken.

Emergency Eyewash and Emergency Eye/Face Wash have two definitions under ANSI Z358.1-2009 standards.

Emergency Eyewash - Gravity-fed (portable) Stations

All gravity fed eyewash stations must meet the minimum requirement of 0.4 gpm flow rate and must meet the requirement of 15 minutes continuous uninterrupted flow.

These units should be serviced every 90 days. Flush them out with fresh water, refill them potable water and add a quality water preservative.

Emergency Eye/Face Wash – Plumbed eyewash and Emergency shower Stations

In an environment where exposure to particulates or chemicals to both the eyes and skin, these types of stations are required. An approved plumbed eye/face wash system must provide a continuous flow of 3.0 gpm. They are also required to maintain a temperature of 60 to 100 degrees temperature. Any temperature below 60 degrees can cause hypothermia. There are several types of these on the market today from floor mount to wall mount units and temperature and flow regulators are readily available.

STOP IT BEFORE IT STARTS!

Prevention is always the key to avoiding workplace accidents and illnesses.

Workers exposed to extreme heat or works in hot environments are at risk of heat stress. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries due to sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness.

Prevention is important. Employers should provide training to workers so they understand what heat stress is, how it affects their health and safety, and how it can be prevented.

Workers should avoid sun, high humidity and extreme heat but when this is unavoidable, use the following check list for preventative measures.

 Schedule your heaviest work in the coolest parts of the day and gradually build up to the heavy work.

 Take frequent breaks in a cool place whenever humidity is high and in extreme heat.

 Drink lots of liquids. You should never be thirsty. There are electrolyte drinks specifically designed for this and readily available.

 Wear clothing that is light colored and loose fitting.

 Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and large amounts of sugar in drinks.

 Pay attention to your physical condition and that of your coworkers-be aware that protective clothing can increase your risk of heat stress.

Treating Burns

Treating Burns
Moving the injured worker from the burn source does not stop the burn completely. Burns need to be cooled down and that must be done inside of 10 minutes to help stop further injury. You can help stop the burning process by cooling down the burn site with an approved commercial burn dressing (Burn Aid Burn Dressing) and skin wash. As you apply an approved commercial burn dressing and skin wash remove any smoldering clothing and jewelry. Smoldering clothing and jewelry which produce heat and be counter productive to trying and cooling the burn. Also remove clothing and jewelry because burns will become swollen and clothing and jewelry constrict the burn area. If any clothing is adhered to the burn cut around it do not remove it. Do not immersed the burn in water it can cause hypothermia. Cool the burn with an approved commercial burn dressing and skin wash for 60 to 120 at a time. Special consideration; never apply ointments and or lotions to burn injuries this may cause heat retention and never break or drain blisters.

A serious burn injury can possibly be the worst type of workplace injury. They are not only very painful but can have a very long rehabilitation.

The American Burn Institute reports that 500,000 burn injuries require medical treatment annually. Of these injuries 40,000 must be hospitalized and close to 4,000 victims die.

Some Interesting Facts;
    70% of patients are male:
    46% are caused by fire and flame:
    32% are caused by scalding:
    57% are workplace injuries:
    33% of victims received burns over 10% of their body:

These are startling numbers. You can see that everyone should be aware of the dangers in the workplace and have a prevention program in place.

Most common types of burns:
    1. Mechanical burn injuries caused by friction such as from ropes.
    2. Electrical burn injuries caused when an electric current passes through the body. The current is    converted to heat damaging anything in its path from entry to exit.
    3. Electro thermal flash injuries occur from the flash from arcing.
    4. Chemical burn injuries can be caused by exposure to a number of chemicals and items used in the workplace. Batteries, cleaners, rust removers, bleaches and solvents.
    5. Thermal injuries caused by exposure to heat in a number of ways from bad sunburn to coming in direct contact with hot objects or flame.

Steps to prevent burns in the workplace:
    1. Wear PPE (personal protective equipment) on the job where needed such as gloves, protective sleeves, safety glasses, goggles and face shields.
    2. Keep open flames and sparks away for combustible materials and chemicals.
    3. Store all combustibles in a safe location.
    4. Maintain all equipment to prevent fires and electrical exposure.
    5. Avoid working around exposed electrical hazards.
    6. Use caution when working with chemicals, understand the risks of working with each one, use the proper PPE and keep the MSDS sheets readily available.
    7. Practice good housekeeping. A likely place for fires to start is scattered debris.

The symptoms of seasonal allergies can impact a person by being a nuisance in every day activities as well as causing lower productivity on the job. Allergies can be a year round battle but are most prevalent in the Spring and Fall.

Unlike a common cold, allergy symptoms occur all at once vs. a cold when it starts with sneezing, then to a runny nose, and then to congestion. A common cold will be gone in 8 to 10 days were allergy symptoms remain as long as the cause of the symptoms remain.

In spring trees such as Ash, Elm, Maple, Sycamore, Oak, and Birch release their pollens. In early summer most grasses and some weeds release their pollens. Late summer we see most weeds release pollens and continue until the first frost. Molds spores can be felt year round. As long as there are decaying plants, humid and moist conditions, mold spores will be around.

Investigating Accidents in the Work Place
What is an Accident?

An “accident” in the work place can be identified as an event that interrupts the completion of a job that may or may not lead to an employee getting injured on the job requiring first aid treatment or any damage to property.

A “near miss” or an “incident” is an event that did not cause damage but had the potential to cause injury or damage.

Each circumstance should be investigated in the same manner for root cause and to prevent further injury to employees.

There should be a basic investigation check-list available so nothing is overlooked by the team doing the research.

Basic steps to investigating an accident:

• First find out exactly what happened.

• Second find the root cause of the incident.

• Then record the “who, what, when, where, and whys” of the accident. Exactly what did take place and all of the facts associated with it.

• Finally, determine whether any action in the past had been taken to prevent such a problem and if so, why the procedures failed this time.

What information should you attempt to acquire during the investigation.

• What were the employees doing at the time?

• Were these employees qualified to do this task?

• What were the company policies or procedures for this task and were they being followed?

• Did the employees use the proper tools; have the correct training and supervision?

• Find any witnesses and record their statements.

• Record the physical condition and location of the work area.

• Determine if any unsafe act may have contributed to this event. If so, was any disciplinary action taken for this incident and any other similar incident that may have happened in the past.

• Finally, make recommendations for any short and/or long term actions that can prevent this form happening again in the future.

First Aid Precautions for Infectious Disease Contamination:
At some point in your career you will probably encounter and injured and/or bleeding employee. The natural response is to quickly respond. But before responding, stop and think.

Blood borne diseases such as Hepatitis and AIDS are transmitted by saliva to blood or blood to blood contact. Many people can be affected and not even know it because of the long incubation period for these diseases.

You should always protect yourself first by following the Universal Precautions as outlined by OSHA when there is a possibility of coming in contact with bodily fluids.

Here are some basic tips to follow:

Protect yourself when issuing first aid:

Wear glasses or a face mask when if there is a chance of splattering. Wear rubber or latex gloves, even small cuts can provide entry for bacteria and this protects both you and the injured person. When providing mouth to mouth resuscitation, always use a disposable micro-shield to prevent saliva transfer.

Have a well stocked First Aid Kit on hand.

All first aid kits must be supplied with sanitary disposable gloves, a disposable micro-shield or such device, glasses or protective face shield, and basic ANSI recommended items to administer proper first aid treatment.

Basic housekeeping:

Always wash your hands and any exposed skin with warm soapy water. Clean up the work area by using a mild soap with a 10:1 chlorine bleach solution to clean up any spill. Training:

What are the most common causes for this?

When repeating the same job junction each day it is normal for people to become complacent over time. When there is a change in normal job functions or distractions accidents can occur.

Never become complacent. Pay attention to the placement of your hands and feet and always know the hazardous areas around you.

Equipment is another major cause of hand and foot injuries. The use of improper equipment and those in poor working condition are big contributors. Also the failure to know the potential danger of equipment and failure to follow lock-out procedures before doing routine maintenance can be catastrophic.

Always follow lock-out procedures, never operate machinery or equipment unless all guards, screens and safety equipment are in place.

Get to know all the hazards associated with the tools and machinery you use on the job and inform management if you notice any faulty or worn equipment.

Arc Welding-Extreme heat produced with an electrical ark permanently bonds the metals. The ark is provided by an energy power supply. The electrode carries the current to form the ark producing gasses that shield the arc from atmosphere and add metal to the weld.

Gas Welding -In this type of welding a gas flame fueled by a combustible gas and oxygen are focused on the surfaces of the metal to be joined until molten metal is formed. This is the most common type of welding since it is easier to control and slower.

Oxygen Arc Cutting-This is the process of removing metal by oxygen cutting (using a gas flame to heat and melt the metal) or arc cutting (using an ark with intense heat to separate the metals).

Eye and Face Personal Protection

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 states that helmets and hand shields should protect the face, forehead, neck and ears from the arc direct radiant energy and weld splatter.

Intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation is produced when welding. This can be very harmful to the eyes if not properly protected. It is very important that the correct shade and type of welding goggles or filters are worn based on the type of welding being done.
Always use the OSHA suggested shade numbers for selecting the proper shade of welding protection.
For the Ark Welding process this varies depending upon the operating current, welding process and wire diameter.

Ventilation-Welding produces harmful fumes based on the different types of welding and metals being worked. These can be very difficult to classify so be sure to have a well ventilated work area at all times.

Protective apparel-Wear the appropriate clothing and protections as defined by the ANSI Z49.1.88-welding and cutting standards.

Protective flame resistant glove such as leather welders gloves with a gauntlet cuff.

Leather or flame resistant aprons to protect the front of the body as well as fire retardant clothing.

Over 30 million workers experience elevated noise levels each day making hearing loss one of the most common ailments in the United States.

In order to address this problem you must first define the noise, measure the decibel (dBSPL) level of the noise and then eliminate or limit the exposure time on the job.

Noise levels are measured in decibels, the louder the noise the higher the decibel level. The decibel system is an exponential scale which means that an increase of 10 decibels is an increase of 10 times the noise level. The decibel range runs from 0 to 140 dB. A whisper can be 40 dB where as the music in a bar or restaurant can be as high as 90-110 dB.

Workplace noise levels must be addressed and monitored when they reach and exceed 90dB. The higher the decibel level, the less time a worker should be exposed.

Hearing protection devices:

In today’s marketplace there are many devices to choose from.

Expandable foam ear plugs are the most common. These are made of a formable soft material that when rolled and placed in the ear canal will expand filling the canal. These are disposable and a cost effective option.

Reusable pre-molded plugs are made from soft plastic, silicone or rubber. These are washable and also cost effective. These are preferred in dusty or dirty environments when rolling the expandable plugs will soil them contaminating the ear canal.

Noise muffs or earmuffs provide better protection than earplugs because they block the noise before it enters the ear canal. These are good for exposure to loud noises experienced on occasion throughout the day and when work conditions do not allow the use of earplugs.

Ear canal caps are a combination of both ear muffs and ear plugs, the headphone like design offers the convenience of wearing them over the head, behind the neck or under the chin and they can be removed and worn around the neck until needed.

Basic Types Of Fire Extinguishers

There are three basic types of fire extinguishers ABC, BC, and Carbon Dioxide. ABC and BC are pressured dry chemical fire extinguishers while the Carbon Dioxide is considered a clean agent and is compressed carbon dioxide gas. It is a clean agent because when used no dry chemical powder is left behind.

If you have not been trained or not familiar with the type of fire extinguishers do not attempt to use them. For example dry chemical fire extinguishers will damage electrical equipment. Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers will put out a Class A fire but ordinary materials will reignite very easily.

All fire extinguishers should have ratings for example ABC. These rateings are determined my ANSI UL Standard 711.

Poisonous Plants

The most common poisonous plant exposure in the US comes from Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac.

When the leaves are broken, bruised or burned they release sap oil, urushoil. When this oil gets on the skin it causes an allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) and most people can develop a red rash with bumps and blisters. When exposed to an amount less than one grain of table salt (50 micrograms) 80 to 90 percent of adults will develop this rash.

For the most part topical over the counter medications can relieve the symptoms; however for a severe reaction immediate medical attention may be required especially when the smoke from burning these plants is inhaled.

Everyone should know how to recognize the plants, how to prevent exposure and what first aid treatment is available when exposed.

Three ways to become exposed;

1. Through direct contact with the oils from the plant

2. Touching tools, clothing, etc. that has oils from the plant on them

3. By inhaling smoke from burning these plants

How to protect yourself;

1. Know how to identify these plants in your work area. The old saying “Leaves of Three, Let it be!” is true for most species of poison oak and poison ivy, however the leaves of poison sumac usually have clusters o 7 to 13 leaves.

2. Wear the proper clothing. Long sleeves and long pants. Wear boots and gloves. Remember to wash any contaminated clothing separately with hot water and strong detergents.

3. Use barrier creams containing Bentoquatum. Creams such as Ivy-X pre-contact can offer protection before contact. Remember to wash off and reapply these twice a day.

4. Do not burn these plants if possible. Inhaling can cause extreme respiratory problems. If this is unavoidable then use a NIOSHA certified respirator rated R-95 or P-95.

5. Finally, use clean tools and clothing. After use clean your tools with a rubbing alcohol (isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol).

First aid for exposed workers;

1. Use rubbing alcohol to rinse the skin. Use strong degreasing soaps (dishwashing detergents) and lots of water rinsing repeatedly.

2. Be sure to scrub well under your fingernails.

3. Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce blistering and itching.

4. Products such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can help relieve the itching.

5. If the worker experiences an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing or severe swelling, call 911 and seek medical attention immediately.

Class D These types of fires involve metals that will catch on fire for example potassium sodium, titanium, or magnesium to name a few. These materials when on fire burn at very high temperatures.

Stinging insects;

Employees that work outdoors will face a wide range of hazards each day on the job. One of the most common is insect stings. The affects of stinging insects can range from a mild irritation to a severe reaction from anaphylactic shock to workers who are allergic to the insect’s venom.

Thousands of people are stung each year by insects and it is estimated that there are 90 to 100 deaths each year as a result of allergic reactions. Most stings however are mild causing only itching or stinging and mild swelling that will disappear in a day or so. There are products available that can reduce the pain of insect stings such as sting swabs or hydrocortisone and are a great addition to any first aid kit.

Treatment for Mild Reactions;
• Move to an area safe from more exposure.
• Remove the stinger by scraping or rubbing with gauze. Never try to pull it out with your fingers or a tweezers to reduce the risk of injecting more venom.
• Use Hydrocortisone cream several times a day until symptoms subside.
• Take an antihistamine containing diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol Severe Allergy) or chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlor-Trimetron, Actifed).
• Apply ice if you notice swelling.

Recognizing a Severe Reaction;
If any of the following symptoms appear, call 911 immediately.
• Dizziness or Fainting
• Confusion
• Swelling of the lips or throat or difficulty breathing
• Rapid heartbeat
• Nausea, cramps, vomiting or hives

Treatment for a Severe Reaction;
• Check for any medications the person may have with them. If they have a history of allergies they may have some medications with them such as an epinephrine injector (Epi-Pen). Always follow the instruction closely when using such a device.
• Have the person lie flat with their feet slightly elevated and loosen any tight clothing, do not give them anything to drink
• Give them an antihistamine pill if they are able to swallow
• If they are choking or vomiting, turn them on their side
• If there are no signs of circulation such as breathing, coughing or movement start CPR immediately.

Prevention;
• Cover your body with clean, smooth and light colored clothing.
• Don’t wear cologne or any scented toiletries. Especially avoid bananas and banana scented toiletries
• Bathe daily, sweat angers bees
• Keep work areas clean, social wasps thrive where humans discard food.
• If a single stinging insect is flying around, remain still. Swatting or swinging at them only provokes and may cause them to sting
• If attacked by several at once get away from them, go indoors when few are around you. A shaded area is better than an open area.
• Do not jump into water. Bees are known to hover above water stinging you when you come up for air.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics one quarter of all compensation claims can be attributed to back injuries. On the job back injuries occur over 1 million times each year. Four out of five injuries are to the lower back and three quarters of these happen while employees are lifting.

These injuries are attributed to several things but mostly;
 Improper training in lifting techniques
 Poor conditioning and loss of flexibility
 Poor work habits and body mechanics
 Lifestyle
 Poor posture

The back supports 80% of the weight of the body when standing straight. When bending and lifting, the stress on the back can increase up to 6 times. Therefore, a 200 pound adult can put the equivalent of 960 pounds of stress on his back when he bends over. This is not counting the weight of the object being lifted which also increases six fold when being lifted bending at the waist. Add them together and it is easy to see why there are so many back strains and injuries each year.

Learn and teach proper lifting techniques.
 Plan ahead, warm up and stretch before lifting. Know your path and movements. Where are you going and is the path clear?
 Get a grip, hold the material tight and keep your balance.
 Use a solid base for lifting. Keep your feet apart shoulder width, keep the object being lifted close to your body,
 Bend with your knees and keep your back straight. Your head shoulders and hips should be in a straight line.
 Always push rather than pull a load.
 TIPS: tighten your stomach muscles and keep your eyes focused slightly upward, this will help hold your back in a lifting position.
 NEVER STRAIN, seek help when the load is too heavy or use equipment such as lifts, hand trucks, lift gates or pallet jacks.
 Never twist your trunk while lifting.
 Avoid lifting overhead with your back arched.
 Never assume a back support or lifting belt will help you lift more weight. These can assist you in keeping proper posture when lifting but will not increase the amount of load you can assert on your back.

OSHA minimum requirements:

OSHA established a minimum standard for both employer and employee dealing with eye and face protection. It simply states;
“the employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses eye or face protection when exposed to eye or face hazards from flying particles, liquids, chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gasses or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation”.

Eyes are a very delicate organ of the human body. It doesn’t take a strong blow to do a lot of damage. Just a tiny spec of dust, a tiny sliver of metal, a small drop of a hazardous chemical can do extensive and permanent damage.

Remember-there is no quick fix for an injured eye. Once your sight is gone there is nothing known to medical science as of today that can replace it.

Your best defense is prevention. There are numerous eye and safety products available on the market today to protect employees on the job. Identify all the potential eye hazards in the workplace and research the best possible means of prevention.

Here are a few things to consider;

• Are you dealing with flying debris? If so then use safety glasses with side shields to protect employees from debris coming from all around them.

• Are you dealing with hard impacts to the front of the face from grinding or other flying debris? If so use a safety lens SEI certified Z87 or higher.

• Are you dealing with chemical splashes? Consider full face protection shields.

Here are a couple of other tips;

• Contact lenses were NEVER meant to be eye protection.

• Never try to remove foreign matter from your or anyone else’s eye, you may make the condition worse. Always seek medical attention.

• Make sure you have the proper fit on your safety eyewear. Take the time to adjust them for fit and comfort. Safety gear that is uncomfortable or cumbersome to wear is more often not worn when needed.

• Have an eye examination on a regular schedule. Poor vision accounts for many industrial accidents.

• Keep your eyewear clean. Keep them in a carrying case and prevent them from getting scratched. Scratched lenses can affect the impact resistance of safety glasses and render them less effective.

• Finally, when in doubt about eye protection needed, consult a supervisor and never take your eyes for granted. You only have one pair and they must last your lifetime.

Managing Pain in the Workplace

PAIN- an unpleasant response to real or perceived tissue damage:

An estimated 50 to 75 million Americans have chronic pain and this is the leading cause of adult disabilities. Chronic pain costs and estimated $100 billion dollars per year and results in over 50 million lost workdays.

Chronic pain is a pain lasting longer than three months where as acute pain associated with an event such as fracture or sprain can go away in three to six months with the body’s normal healing process.

Back pain is the most frequently identified cause of lost time on the job as well as lost productivity. It accounts for 12.7% in lost productivity compared to absenteeism only 1.1%. As you can see, pain management on the job can be very beneficial.

Another leading cause of absenteeism and lost productivity are Migraine headaches. Reoccurring headaches affect 12% of the US adult population.

A 2006 survey stated that 89% of all sufferers of chronic pain go to work rather than stay home each day. On the job pain management solutions are wide and vary with each disability but there are a number of common sense thing to consider while on the job.

• Adopt healthy habits. Eating healthy and exercising at home as well as on the job can be very beneficial. Check out any health and wellness programs that may be offered by your employer.

• Use medications. There are lots of non-drowsy over the counter medications available that are very effective at reducing discomfort.

• Avoid stressful situations. Take regular breaks by stretching, meditating in a quiet area or taking walks.

• Adjust your workspace; modify your workstation altering the height, use hand or foot rests, and limit the number of repetitive motions or twists. Even limiting the weight of objects that may need lifted.

• Talk to your human resources department about accommodations to help you perform daily tasks at your workstation.

• Talk to your doctor about pharmacological treatments. The use of prescription or over the counter drugs.

• Consider all complementary therapies such as occupational, massage, acupuncture, osteopathic or chiropractic treatments.

Don’t let chronic pain prevent you from performing your job or being a less productive employee.

OSHA 29 CFR 1904 employers must post a summary and number of job related injuries and illnesses that happen last year.

OSHA says the summary must list the total number of job related injuries and illness that happened in the year 2010. These injuries also should have been logged on the OSHA 300 From. This info must be posted from February 1 to April 30.

The OSHA Form 300 must be openly displayed in an area wherever notices are posted for employees. This form must be available to those who work from home or move from workplace to workplace.

FIRE SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

What you should know!

The National Safety Council reported that in 1988 over $3.1 billion dollars in losses were due to workplace fires. At that time is was also estimated that 360 deaths were attributed to those fires.

In Hamlet, North Carolina for example, 25 workers in a poultry processing plant died due to problems with fire exits and poor extinguishing systems. (DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU)!

OSHA has outlined standards for businesses on proper exits, emergency plans, employee training, fire fighting equipment and evacuation plans. Each employer is required to be familiar with these standards and have a plan of action. OSHA inspectors WILL check to see if employers are complying with these standards during an inspection.

Follow these basic guidelines to get started with your fire safety plan.

 Have the correct extinguishers on hand: Different extinguishers are recommended for each type of fire.

o Class A: for wood, textiles and rubbish use foam or water

o Class B: for grease, motor vehicle or flammable liquids use foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or vaporizing liquid.

o Class C: for fires that involve electrical components. (Never use a water-type extinguisher on a live electrical equipment fire).

 Have a written emergency evacuation plan.

o Include evacuation routes to be used by your employees.

o Include procedures for accounting for all employees, special procedures for helping physically impaired employees and procedures for those employees who stay behind to shut down plant equipment before they evacuate.

o Have this plan available for employee review.

o Train all employees on what is to be done in an emergency.

 Fire Exits.

o Each building must have two means of escape in case of a fire.

o Each exit must be clearly marked.

o Exits must be free of debris and obstructions.

o Emergency exits should NEVER be locked.

 Warning System.

o A warning system can be an auditable alarm or a message over a loudspeaker system.

o Employees should also “sound the alarm” when they discover a fire and warn others in the area.

 Fire Prevention.

o Identify sources of possible ignition in the business.

o Follow good housekeeping procedures for the storage of flammable liquids and clean up of spills.

o Control workplace ignition sources such as smoking, welding, cutting and etc.

We are moving very fast in the workplace to improve our quality of products and or services and to be promoted in the next successful step of our professional life. This intention is definitely fine, but in most cases we are not alert to sensitive physical issues like eye safety. Most companies are installing a vast security system like access control, electronic door supervision or so called close protection for our physical security, but very little time is spent thinking about the safety of our eyes. After all, we all know that without the light of our eyes our life is totally different and full of darkness. So it is time to be informed about the proper safety of eyes.

Eyewash stations in the work place are very important so our eyes are protected in case of an emergency. We strongly recommend the use of safety glasses or welding goggles.

By a recent survey it is identified that about 2000 plus people injure their eyes everyday in the workplace and 15% to 20% of those injured get a permanent loss. This number can be reduced easily by using an eye protection and having a portable eyewash station.

Worker Protection in Extreme Cold Temperatures

Very cold and very hot temperatures can both be dangerous to your employee’s health.

Prolonged exposure to hot temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and fainting, although less serious, this can interfere with an employees ability to do the work and may lead to Heat Stroke. Heat Stroke is much more serious and could be fatal if not addressed quickly.

Working in very cold environments can lead to hypothermia (a very dangerous overcooling of the body) or frostbite (freezing of exposed extremities such as toes, fingers, ear lobes, and nose). Hypothermia can also be fatal if not recognized quickly.

Victims of hypothermia often are unable to notice the symptoms, it depends on co-workers and their ability to recognize the symptoms and seek medical attention.

Look for these warning signs;

• Pain in their extremities (hands, feet, ears, nose, etc.)

• Severe shivering

• Nausea

• Dizziness

• Fatigue

• Irritability or euphoria

First Aid for hypothermia victims

At this point when symptoms are first noticed, the worker should be moved to a warm environment and then seek medical advice.

Place the worker between blankets or towels so the body temperature can rise gradually. Cover their head and remove any wet clothing. Body to body contact may also be used to raise the body temperature slowly. Do not use electric blankets, hot water bottles, or attempt to re-warm the victim on site. Give the victim a warm, sweet, caffeine-free, nonalcoholic drink unless the victim is losing consciousness or convulsing.

Clothing for working in the cold

Wear clothing in multiple layers. The inner layer should provide insulation and have the ability to wick away moisture. Additional layers should provide insulation for the appropriate working conditions. They should be easy to open and remove if the worker gets to hot during strenuous activity and eliminate excessive sweating and build up of moisture. In wet conditions the outer layer should be waterproof. Keep all clothing dry and clean. Dirt can fill the air cells in fibers and destroy its insulating ability.

Since almost 50% of heat loss is through the head wear a wool knit cap or a hard hat liner.

Wear the appropriate eye and face protection
